Projects

Project: Various household tasks requiring knowledge and tools.

Assemble a new Traeger grill.  Disassemble and pack faulty grill. Convert fluorescent light in garage to LED.  Hang original artwork in sleeping rooms.

"He is timely, neat, polite and quite knowledgeable.", Faye B. of Santa Rosa, CA 4/29/2018

Project: Repair and correctly install historic light fixture

This historic light fixture hangs in the Rhine House at the Beringer Estate in Saint Helena.  The pull-chain switch failed causing an electric shock and failure of the fixture.  The non-standard assembly components required custom machining to re-install the fixture properly and safely.  The fixture was re-wired and brought back to full functionality.

Project: Correct sticking front-door lock

When a property manager prepares an apartment for rent they need responsive and competent services.  This lock was sticking due to a failed component in the deadbolt.  John diagnosed the problem, procured a new lock and installed it under budget on a Sunday.  The property was ready to show the next day.

Project: Construct sheds for wildfire victims

"Hope City rebuilds homes to help rebuild the lives of disaster victims.  John's broad knowledge and skills in so many facets of construction were instrumental in the successful build of ten new sheds for families who lost their homes in the wildfires."  Allen Spence, Hope City Northern California, Director of Field Operations, April 28, 2018

Project: Fabricate and install roof corbels on historic home

A roof replacement project falls behind due to lack of skilled carpenters to work on the rafters and corbels.  John stepped up to help sister rafters, plan and install the decking layout, fabricate the barge rafters and fabricate and install the thirteen corbels (decorative brackets) below the chalet-style barge rafters.  Using his skills in carpentry and practical use of trigonometry, the job was finished with high quality, and ready for painting on schedule.  The new corbels and barge rafters were fabricated to look the same as the original to retain the historic integrity of the 130-year-old home.

Project: Fence repair

Mishaps occur during construction projects.  The team stripping the roof accidentally destroyed a section of a historic picket fence with the dump truck.  John repaired the fence by making pickets out of reclaimed redwood fence boards.  The newly repaired fence looks old.

More Projects

Project: Hang Curtains

Curtains add beauty, privacy and insulation to windows.  Getting the curtain rod just the right height for the soft look requires skills, which John has.  This project was done in the early evening for the convenience of the homeowner.

Project: Deck railing repair

A party-goer applies too much pressure to a deck railing which splits the wood.  The homeowner wanted it repaired to retain the patina of the wood.  John glued the wood using Gorilla Glue.  The railing looks and performs as good as before while looking consistent with the rest of the deck.

Project: Deck repair

John helps property managers by keeping the rental units in good repair.  The lower railing of this deck rotted and fell apart due to sprinkler spray.  John trimmed the posts to remove the dry-rot.  He fabricated new horizontal stringers with lap-jointed corners out of new and reclaimed redwood.  Better than new.

Project: Replace Dryer Exhaust Ducting

Dryer ducts are notorious for getting clogged with lint, especially if flexible tubing is used.  This homeowner bought a new washer and dryer, but the dryer would not function properly after installation.  John diagnosed the problem.  He removed the clogged duct and replaced with rigid for as much of the run as practical.  This duct will operate without clogging.
